Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate dentinal tubule occlusion efficacy and safety of dentifrice containing nano sized Hydroxy Apatite for rabbit.
Methods: Subjects of this study were 15 of 14-weeks old male New Zealand white rabbits. For the study, rabbits were div-ided two groups of 7 and 14 day treatment. Upper and lower 4 incisors, totally 60 teeth were used for this experiment. Experiment dentifrice 1 and 2 are prepared by containing 2% and 8% nano sized Hydeoxy Apatite respectively. For positive control, on-sale anti-hypersensitivity dentifrice which containing 19% of micro sized Hydroxy Apatite was used. Negative control was distilled water. For the safety evaluation, microscopic observation was performed for sacrificed rabbit¡¯s gingival tissue.
Results: 1. Experimental 1, 2 and positive control dentifrice showed dentinal tubule occlusion efficacy (p£¼0.001) and 14 days treated experiment 1 and 2 groups showed higher occlusion effect than 7 days treatment (p£¼0.01). 2. After 7 days treat-ment, experiment 1 and 2 dentifrice showed more effective dentinal tubule occlusion property than positive control denti-frice (p£¼0.001). There is no significant difference between groups of experiment 1 and 2. 3. After 14-days treatment, denti-nal tubule occlusion efficacy was higher in orderly experiment 2, experiment 1 and positive control dentifrice (p£¼0.001). 4. Any inflammation could not be found for all experimental gingival tissue samples.
Conclusion: Dentifrice containing nano-HAP showed higher dentinal tubule occlusion efficacy for rabbit than micro-HAP contained dentifrice. Dentinal tubule occlusion effect increased by nano-HAP content and treatment period. Dentifrice con-taining nano-HAP was safe for gingival tissue of rabbits.
